In 1980, the band released a six-sided fold-out EP named 1980: The First Fifteen Minutes. Vice Versa, Clock DVA, the Stunt Kites and I'm So Hollow (all then-local bands) each contributed one track to the EP, providing each of the bands their first proper vinyl exposure before getting their individual record deals.[3] The EP was also named "single of the week" by NME, much to the surprise of the band.
Stephen Jones started writing and recording songs at home and his first collection of these demos, I Was Born a Man, was released in July 1995 using the name Baby Bird. He formed a band in order to tour and promote this work. In 1996, Babybird signed to Echo Records and their first single was released in July 1996. Babybird were dropped from their record label in 2000 after their third album, Bugged, had poor sales. The band then split. Jones continued on his own, writing fiction, releasing solo work and created the score for the film Blessed (2004). In October 2005, the band reformed with three members and created the album Between My Ears There Is Nothing But Music, released in September 2006. They went on tour in November 2009 and then split again in 2013. After a number of Babybird releases on Bandcamp from 2015, Jones took the band back out on tour in late 2017 with a new line up. A compilation album Happy Stupid Nothing was released in 2019, featuring a selection of Babybird tracks from 2015 onwards.[2]
Jones had begun writing songs and recording home demos as part of an experimental theatre group in Nottingham. A collection of these demos, I Was Born a Man, was released in July 1995, under the name Baby Bird. He recruited a band made up of Huw Chadbourn (keyboards), Robert Gregory (drums), John Pedder (bass) and Luke Scott (guitar), in order to tour and promote his work.[3]
In 1997 the band returned to the studio, with producer Darren Allison. They recorded two new tracks - a brand new version of Bad Shave, and a re-working of CFC. These new tracks were included on the 1997 U.S.A. release of Ugly Beautiful.
Following the introduction, the set kicks off Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar." With a heavy Stax feel, this features Donna on lead vocals and is a nice warm-up exercise for Schuster and Scott, who both take solos. Keith takes over on lead vocal for a unique take on the Motown classic, "Come See About Me," a 1964 hit for The Supremes and a hit for Motown again in 1967 when Jr. Walker & the All Stars recorded a much funkier sax-fueled version. This leans more toward the latter funkier version and although Keith isn't a strong vocalist, the instrumental end of things more than makes up for it. Donna fronts the band again for the bluesy "Strange Man," a song that she would soon bring to the Jerry Garcia Band's repertoire the following year. This is a strong showing, but Donna really hits her stride on "Sweet Baby," one of the most delightful tracks on their album. Sweet and sultry, her voice is most compelling here. The band provides a nice reggae-tinged groove with Schuster adding a lovely flute throughout.
By 1988 with their critically-acclaimed album George Best on release and touring to packed indie venues country-wide, The Wedding Present were about to move up a level. Things were changing behind the scenes (this was the last release to feature original drummer Shaun Charman) and quite clearly on record too as this new single was the poppiest, catchiest song the band had created to this point. 2ff7e9595c
